“I HATE THE TREADMILL!” she said.
“Then WHY are you DOING it?!?” I asked.
“Because someone told me I should?”
I think this is probably a fairly common scenario for a lot of people. I am here to tell you that if you HATE the treadmill… then DON’T DO IT! Let it go. Go break-up with it… tell it that things just aren’t working out.
The truth is that physical activity is good for you. The other truth is, there are a lot of other ways to get physical activity besides making yourself suffer through endless minutes on a treadmill. How long do you really think you can make yourself do something that you hate? Is that a realistically sustainable option? Even if you CAN make yourself continue to do it… do you think that’s healthy for your psyche to keep doing?
Your goal is to find something that you enjoy doing… something that makes you smile, brings you joy, maybe even makes you feel like a kid again! Have you always wanted to try boxing? Now’s your chance! Take a Zumba class, cycling class, try out the rower even. What about doing something that gets your whole family involved and sets a positive example? Can you and the kids go on a bike ride a few times a week? What about rollerblading? Now is the perfect time to teach your children that exercise doesn’t have to be a mind-numbing, horrible chore that they too will one day “have to do” when they’re grownups. Show them that it can be fun and playful! There are SO many different ways to move your body and get your heart rate up that there is really NO reason to be stuck doing something you don’t enjoy. Life is too short for that!
So, to summarize…
DO things you ENJOY.
DON’T do things you HATE.
Have FUN, break a SWEAT.
